Students enrolled in classes/workshops at Dinderbeck Studios receive free open-studio usage the week following when their class takes place.

This is a beginning letterpress workshop where you will learn to print your own unique letterpress print. You will learn the basics of typesetting, and printing by choosing from drawers of hundreds of image blocks and movable type.

Objective: In this course you will learn basics of letterpress including type drawer layout, setting and locking a form together, mixing ink, and printing on our Vandercook 325G and Nolan Proof Press. We give you a bit of freedom to make what you like but a small suggestion a card for someone and maybe one even for you! You deserve it too!

This course is intended for individuals who have little to no experience in letterpress.

What you will learn overview:

  • Brief Orientation to studio
  • Demonstration of letterpress procedures, examples, composition, form setting and lock up.
  • Begin exploring letterpress drawers and setting form.
  • Demo on ink mixing/application, press operation and clean-up
  • Finish setting forms and locking in (if needed)
  • Printing

Materials Provided:

  • Variety of printing papers
  • Variety of printing inks
  • Specialized letterpress tools
  • Limited selection of A1 size envelopes

Local Paper Supplier.

    • Service Reproduction- Stonehenge, Reeves, Bristol (these are great for letterpress)
    • French Paper Co. (frenchpaper.com) – This paper is great for all kinds of letterpress applications. Order online and typically receive it the following day. I encourage you to go in on a couple colors with some friends. When thinking about weight I always tend towards cover stock 100# or 140#

Take the class with a friend. We keep classes small at a maximum of 6 people per class so sign up as soon as possible. We need a minimum of 3 students to hold a class.

Class cost is non refundable once class has reached minimum capacity. In the event that classes does not take place due to low enrollment or sickness class cost will be completely refunded.
